One of the biggest decisions for making your dream kitchen is the finish on your kitchen cabinets. Staining and painting a cabinet are the two main finishes people use but are completely different. Keep in mind, that you should make your decision while also looking at samples of your countertops, backsplashes as well as any other textures and colors in your kitchen to make sure that they all compliment each other.

When making your cabinet finish decision keep these tips in mind.
Stain
- It is often the less expensive option, and more customs cabinet shops offer in-house staining than painting.
- Stain has the opportunity to expose book matched grain, in which the grain is consistent but flipped two at a time so that there is a mirror effect of the grain.
- Do not think that just because you are staining means that you have to keep to the classic color of the wood, stains can include just about any hue or color you can think of.
Paint
- There are many different paint options to decide on how they wear, chip, resist water, how they feel, and how they look.
- Even the utensil used to apply the paint can affect how it performs over the long run. Spray finishes can produce the smoothest most consistent finish but are much harder to touch up than back brushed.
- Be prepared to wait a little longer and to pay a little more. Most of the time the cabinets will have to be sent off to be painted at another location, so the expense and time can add up quickly.
