Just in Time for Father’s Day: Create the Man Cave of your Dreams!

The man cave. It’s what every man wants. This Father’s Day, give your man a place to escape, a place to watch his favorite sports team in peace. These helpful design tips can help you turn your basement from blah to yeah, and show your appreciation for your man this Father’s Day.

Step 1: Decide on a Concept

Whether your man is into sports, movies, or just a place to relax, figure out what he’s into. Is he more of a baseball guy? Hockey? Football? Design the cave around his favorite sports team, or his favorite movie. Or, better yet, create a functional space the whole family will love, center the space around a big, flat screen television with a nice comfy couch.

Step 2: Use Dark Colors to Create the Cave Effect

Dark wood and paint colors such as gray and navy are in. Create the cave effect by using colors and hardwood that complement each other. Dark, wide hardwood is currently all the rage in home design. Naturally dark woods such as cherry, or walnut will give your space the comfortable feel you’re looking for. If your home has kids and dogs that will be part of the mix, you may want to try scraped hardwood. Scraped hardwood is a natural hardwood surface that doesn’t show scratches easily.

As for paint colors, try a light shade of navy or gray to give the room a dark and cozy feel and it will go nicely with the dark hardwood flooring. A deep shade of beige is also a great color that will complement the brown hardwood.

Step 3: Man Cave Must Have: The Bar

Get inspired through our basement gallery page. Home bars are very popular. Entertain at home, invite the neighbors and enjoy an evening at home while you keep up to date on the latest game. Complement your cave concept with dark bar stools and appliances that stand out. Add a beer and wine fridge for the wow factor your guests will love, and keep your adult beverages cold. Add recessed lighting to your bar area for just the right ambiance. Granite countertops with accenting dark colors on a lighter slab such as beige will make the bar stand out. Don’t forget to add a beer tap!

Add light tile flooring around your bar to separate it from the rest of the room. Tile is great for cleaning up spills that can happen around the bar area, while hardwood can damage more easily than tile.

Step 4: Add a Focal Point

After creating your space, decide what your basement man cave is missing. Fireplaces make an excellent focal point and make the room toasty and warm in the winter. Accent the room with a fireplace created with lighter stone to complement the darker hardwood and furniture in your man cave. Another popular focal point are classic bar games and even a pool table. Pool tables are great for entertaining, and can be customized to match the hardwood in your new space.
