QuirkyCruise News: National Geographic River Cruises with Scenic

by Anne Kalosh.

National Geographic Expeditions and Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours have recently teamed up to launch a new line of National Geographic River Cruises. They combine Scenic’s all-inclusive luxury river cruise experience with National Geographic’s legacy of science, conservation and exploration.

Each sailing will be accompanied by a National Geographic expert to enrich the experience with educational presentations and informal discussions. European cruises will also carry a National Geographic photographer to share professional techniques and help passengers hone their photography skills.

One of the top river-cruise operators, Scenic includes everything in the fare, from transfers to tips, bottled water to butler service, excursions to open bar.

The cruises will begin in 2018 and operate on the Rhine, Danube, Main and Moselle rivers; in Holland and Belgium; through France’s Bordeaux region; in Portugal’s Douro Valley;  and on Myanmar’s Irrawaddy.

For example, the seven-night “Danube Christmas Markets Cruise,” Nuremburg to Budapest aboard SCENIC AMBER, is priced starting at $3,245. Award-winning National Geographic photographer Sisse Brimberg and Prague-based journalist and author Mark Baker will be along, Dec. 2-9, 2018.

The 10-night “Irawaddy River Cruise,” from Mandalay to Yangon aboard SCENIC AURA, is priced starting at $6,595. Two departures are offered, with Asian culture and history expert/museum curator Paula Swart scheduled for the Dec. 23, 2018 – Jan. 2, 2019 voyage. The second departure is Feb. 1-11, 2019.

On National Geographic River Cruises, travelers can choose from a rich menu of experiential excursions that range from hikes and bike rides to in-depth programs that focus on the natural world, culture and history.

The cruises can be booked directly through National Geographic Expeditions or Scenic.

National Geographic Expeditions also has an alliance with Lindblad Expeditions for small-ship expedition cruises to the Polar Regions, Alaska, Baja California, Galapagos, Amazon River, Easter Island, the South Pacific and more.
