Small Ship Cruise News: A New Cruise Line for the St. Lawrence River

A new line joins pool of small ship cruise lines

The soon-to-launch MS Jacques Cartier.

A new cruise line, Croisières M/S Jacques-Cartier Inc., will begin cruise service on the St. Lawrence River in summer of 2018, using a ship called M/S JACQUES CARTIER named after the 16th-century French explorer who claimed Canada for France.

The focus will be active 5- to 10-day cruises that will involve hiking, kayaking and explorations by Zodiacs mostly in the Province of Quebec.

The ship has already had a long life as an excursion boat based at Trois-Rivières along the St. Lawrence, and it will be rebuilt into a sleek 66-passenger overnight cruise vessel with the lines of a yacht and quite unlike what it looks like now.

Trois-Rivières will be the home base with the vessel calling at Montreal, Quebec and a half-dozen other ports while also poking into bays and stops at small islands that the bigger ships cannot access.

The owners are a French-Canadian couple with long family history as ship owners, including this vessel, and both are certified captains. Given their background, cruises will be bilingual French-English.

Potential passengers are being asked to suggest itineraries and specific destinations, and in early 2017 the 2018 program will be finalized.
